They urge to "bet on sustainable fashion and give used garments a second chance"

With recycled garments, the focus is mainly on creating an elaborate product considering the environmental and social impact it may have throughout its life cycle. This type of design, in the textile industry, is not something new: almost a decade and a half ago, a Vogue magazine publication stated: “Sustainable fashion did not emerge to be a short-term trend, but could last for several seasons. ”. From the styles that have been emerging for some time now, it would seem that the forecast was not wrong.

"This venture, which I started in 2020, consists of mixing things that interest me and that are my concern for the environment and fashion," commented the creator of the sustainable clothing brand "Vestir Conscious", María Paz Domínguez, in communication with Radio University. “I created this system in which people donate unused clothes to me and, in this way, I make new clothes that are one hundred percent recycled. Until now, I have not used purchased materials,” she added.

“I always recycled clothes and I wanted to start a clothing brand, but it made me a lot of noise to continue generating more clothes and waste, that's why I thought there should be a way to design without damaging so much,” said the designer. At the same time, she affirmed that since she was a child she was interested in fashion, although she assured that, when she was entering adolescence, she understood that the textile industry generates a large amount of waste per year.

“How to dress is something everyday, nobody realizes the amount of waste that is generated, that is why what I am looking for is that the garment, when finished, has the essence of what it was before, because I am sure that it will always be it gives a message through fashion”, highlighted Domínguez. In addition, she explained that, at first, the impact on the networks was quite difficult because "people did not understand where what they were doing was going." “I tried to educate and explain what I was doing; later, they already accepted the idea and the social impact is good”, she commented with satisfaction.

Although she emphasizes that this type of design is positive for the environment, she recognizes that there are still not too many sustainable garments. “There are not many brands that work this way in the country. This is the future and not the brands that launch many garments, because there will no longer be where to put so many disused clothes, "she said. "We must bet on sustainable fashion and give second-hand garments a second chance, to give clothing a new useful life," she defined.
