Canary Islands clings to summer | South Newspaper

GLORIA SALGADO Las Palmas

Sheltered from the warmth of the Canary Islands, 38 swimwear designers and brands had the perfect setting to show their proposals for next summer. The Cabildo and Ifema hosted an exceptional edition of Gran Canaria Swim Week by Moda Cálida, which took place on an impressive circular catwalk at the ExpoMeloneras site, in Maspalomas, with an exceptional ambassador: Paz Vega.

The only exclusive professional swimwear catwalk in Europe brought together the best of the sector who, with as much courage as creative skill, turned the event into much more than a sample of pieces to wear on the beach or the beach bar. In a display of versatility, swimsuits and bikinis venture into other fields. Making the most of this concept, the garments are worn until night with a color reset inspired by the atypical summer that we have left behind. All under the cloak of sustainability, which is already a fact.

Less use of a commodity as scarce as water and more ethical productions, among other lessons, leave us established designers such as Guillermina Baeza, TCN –who returns to the catwalk after two years without doing so– Bannana Moon, Gottex, Emphasis, Dolores Cortés, Chela Clo, Diazar, Livia, the queen of 'tie dye' All That She loves –whose creative director does a double at TCN–, Carlos San Juan with a wonderful and very sensual proposal, the ecological All Sisters, Como a Fish in the Water, the omnipresent Agatha Ruiz de la Prada and the know-how of last year's winner of the best collection, Aurelia Gil.

Established firms that left their space for emerging talent with the most youthful conception of swimwear. The Canarian water cat was won by the Laut Apparel brand with the Award for Best Emerging Collection 2020. A well-deserved recognition for its impeccable execution and innovative styling in a tribute to the women who began working in the fields after the war, more specifically tomato productions. Red tomatoes that curdle the prints, highlighting the culture of Gran Canaria, while the fabrics of the jackets, the same ones that were used as aprons at that time, become skirts and vests, transporting us to a not so distant past.

Swimwear, brought to life by models and well-known faces such as Helen Lindes, Águeda López (singer Luis Fonsi's wife), Joana Sanz, Malena Costa, Juan Betancourt, Carlo Costanzia and Toni Engonga, They no longer understand schedules or spaces, as they demonstrated on a catwalk that had an excellent impact not only on the island, but on the peninsula and internationally, with the display of their fashion shows in Portugal or Latin America because the Canary Islands and their know-how are more on trend than ever.
